Cherry Live‑Edge Sculpture

This piece began as a simple chance find — a bundle of free firewood listed on Facebook Marketplace. Collecting it led to an unexpected reconnection with an old school teacher, who shared the story behind the timber: three mature cherry trees had been removed after their roots caused severe damage to both his and his neighbours’ house foundations. What could have been discarded became a material with history, memory, and meaning.

Standing 205mm high with a 110mm base, this Cherry turning carries that story forward. The wood’s warm tones and subtle grain shifts are enhanced by the live‑edge cap, giving the piece a natural, organic presence. It’s tactile, elegant, and quietly expressive — a reminder of how reclaimed materials can be transformed into something lasting.

Finished with Chestnut cellulose sanding sealer and Chestnut Microcrystalline Wax, the surface is fully food‑safe and toy‑safe, with a smooth, durable sheen that highlights the cherry’s natural warmth.

Crafted using live‑edge turning, the piece preserves the tree’s original character while giving it a refined, sculptural form. A material once destined for firewood now stands as a thoughtful, handcrafted object with a second life.
